Pay by Bank

Fintech — 2025

— Making Pay by Bank recognisable across every checkout.

Challenge

Pay by Bank appeared inside dozens of merchant checkouts as a fully white label experience. Without a consistent signature, customers had no reason to recognise it as the same payment method from one merchant to the next. That limited a crucial product advantage: after someone pays through TrueLayer, their next Pay by Bank experience can become faster across the network. The challenge was to build recognition without adding friction at the most sensitive point of the journey.

Strategy

We positioned Pay by Bank as a meta brand. It does not compete with merchants and banks. Instead, it creates a recognisable layer that connects them. The system remains quiet enough for major merchants to adopt, while building enough consistency for customers to recognise the payment method wherever they encounter it.

Identity

Layering became the central idea. Bank logos remain prominent for trust, while perspective and structured containers give the experience a distinctive TrueLayer signature. Instead of relying on another generic flat pattern, the system creates recognisable depth across different merchants, banks and interfaces.

Application

At checkout, the brand remains restrained, functional and fast. Beyond checkout, it becomes more expressive. Portal compositions connect products, people and payment interfaces, showing the real world moment enabled by Pay by Bank without losing the link to the product experience.

Outcome

Pay by Bank moved from an invisible feature to a consistent experience across merchants. The system gave TrueLayer a recognisable presence while remaining flexible enough for brands such as Ryanair, Just Eat and eBay. Its restraint was not a compromise. It was what allowed the identity to scale across the network.
